Getting LoneStar’s Miniature Swine to You
Care. It is what we are committed to at LoneStar Laboratory Swine. This care permeates every facet of our organization. We treat these animals as individuals and go the extra mile to ensure their comfort. Our commitment to care for these animals is prevalent in our shipping methods. Most animals are sensitive to the shipping process – and miniature swine are no exception. That’s why LoneStar transports its miniature swine to our clients in a state-of-the-art, custom-designed, climate-controlled trailer. This trailer includes features that allow the animals to have access to water at all times and a camera system allowing the driver to observe the animals continuously.
At LoneStar our desire to ensure a safe trip and deliver our animals with as little stress as possible begins well before the trailer leaves our state-of-the-art facilities. It starts with the highest quality animals that have well-documented and reliable genetic records. Couple these animals with our team’s decades of swine management expertise & our pre-shipping regimen and you will be assured of the best animals in the research industry.
We begin keeping detailed records on the day of its birth and don’t stop until our animal is delivered to one of the nation’s premier research facilities. We want our animals and the research facilities to know how we have cared for our animals each step of the way. LoneStar Laboratory Swine have records certifying it free of brucellosis, pseudo rabies and porcine reproductive respiratory syndrome.
Our pre-shipping regimen is an integral part of ensuring that our clients receive miniature swine that are well-adjusted and as minimally stressed as possible upon receipt.
This regimen begins with the selection of animal models best suited for clients’ needs. Then each animal is thoroughly examined and its records reviewed. A broad gram negative antibiotic is administered either when requested by our client or when we know the animal may be exposed to other miniature swine. If the animal has not already received an anthelmintic as part of its routine care, one will be administered before shipping day.
Another piece of the pre-shipping regimen that is particularly important is socialization preparation. This preparation significantly reduces the stress that can be associated to shipping and the resulting change in their surroundings. We accomplish this by having our staff interact with the animals on a daily basis. We attempt to reinforce the socialization process with this constant interaction that creates a positive human-to-pig connection. We encourage our clients to maintain this routine after delivery to reduce the amount of time it takes the animal to fully adapt to its new surroundings. |
